VHS Retro Effect (Adobe After Effects 2024 and 2025)
Miss that old 1980’s VHS look? Us, too! Let’s overdub that too-pretty video so it crackles with that retro nostalgia!
We love us some third-party VHS plugins. There’s some great ones out there. But, man… is everything a subscription now?
We looked at some of our favorite VHS plugins and we went into the lab, drank coffee, and watched old sci-fi and horror VHS movies to get us in the right frame of mind. (Nothing like watching old John Carpenter horror movies with that grimy, VHS-rental tape feel over the top!).
It’s no secret that VFXJAMS has a big case of the “nostalgias”. We’re not sure if the old 80’s movies really were better than movies today or if it just feels that way. They look and feel different. They call back to a time when you just watched the movie. No looking at phones, or swiping… whichever way. They captured our attention because they had our attention. You’d go spend an hour at your local mom-and-pop video rental (or Blockbuster if you were fancy) picking out a flick or two, grab some candy, and, boom… there’s your Friday night.
Remember that dream sequence in Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness”? Where would those shots even be without VHS? Soooo good! And creepy! Or how about that whole “found-footage” craze from the 90’s? Nowheresville, man! Not without that those static-filled frames that were hiding all kinds of monsters behind that tape grinding against that old VCR’s playheads!
Okay. Enough of this reminiscing. Have fun making your new stuff look retro. We think your Synthwave, Chillwave, or Whateverwave videos will thank you for it.
